Dwain Dennis has been Sheriff of Ionia County since January 1998.  He began his career with Ionia County Sheriff's office in 1972 as a Deputy.  Dennis was promoted to the position of detective in 1975, and again to detective Lt. in 1986.

        Sheriff Dennis holds a bachelor degree in business management and is a graduate of the national F.B.I. Academy (Session 127).  Dennis is also a graduate of the Law Enforcement Executive Leadership institute and the National Sheriff's institute.  Prior to his law enforcement profession, Sheriff Dennis served three years with the United States Army from 1966 to 1969.

        Presently, Sheriff Dennis is active in implementing and promoting jail diversion of the mentally ill, providing quality programs for inmates, supporting a new TRIAD program as well as many other community Programs.

        Ionia has a population of about 60,000.  There are six prisons in or around Ionia, which provide the community with many career opportunities.  Ionia is primarily a rural community abundant in farmlands.  The entire county is rich with historical buildings, covered bridges, well maintained parks, river walks, lakes and rivers that provide a source of recreation.
